Free Read Aloud Guide for Parents and Educators

  • For young readers, begin with a short finger play.

  • Share the cover - What might this book be about? (For very young children, give them 3 choices - is it about x, y, or z)

  • Talk about how the book connects to the children’s experience.

  • Dust jacket - share what’s underneath (the undies).

  • Explain the role of author and illustrator.

  • Share the endpapers - first and last illustrated pages of the book.

  • Find a way children can participate in the story. For example, teach a repeated refrain and encourage them to join in.

  • Use expression - change voice quality for each character.

  • Use dynamics - loud, soft, speed up, slow down, whisper in suspenseful parts.

  • Stop at suspenseful moments and ask children to predict what might happen next.

  • Allow children opportunities to respond to the story and comment.

  • Oral close - have children fill in the blank with predictable words.

  • Incorporate actions that support the narrative.

  • Ask about the emotions - how is the main character feeling?

  • Can you think of a different way the story might end?

  • Make it fun - add props!

  • Don’t expect children to have all the answers.

  • Allow plenty of time and adapt according to your audience reaction.

  • Allow children to comment on the story.

  • *DO NOT feel you need to do all of these, choose what works for you!
